DIY Headboard

Yes, everyone is doing it. Yes, we had to join the party! We purchased a dresser and night stand from Ashley Furniture for our main guest room, but the bed was just too much money. We couldn’t justify $700-$900 on a spare bedroom bed only. The $100 or so for wood and fabric for a DIY headboard sounded much more wallet-friendly. And here is our finished product:

Our original intention was to tuft the headboard using instructions by Addicted2Decorating and wanted an end result that somewhat resembled this:

And I found a headboard shape guide at Topline furniture and picked out the one we I liked:
Below are some in progress pictures. Since we are always too involved to stage and take better pictures keepin it real, I thought I would point out the other items in the picture are are unrelated to this project.

I didn’t get a picture of the foam, but we used 2″ foam on the headboard first. Then we wrapped the fabric around it and stapled it to the back of the MDF board. The legs didn’t turn out all that great, but you won’t really see them anyway. We didn’t want to hang the frame on the wall and wanted it to be transportable, hence the legs that attach to the frame. I can’t wait to put this room together. At least writing about this has encouraged me to paint those staircase spindles so that we can get carpet upstairs and put this room together!!!!!!!
The headboard is officially Max approved:

Entry – Picture Cluster

Just wanted to share our entry way update. It is finally starting to look like someone might live in our house instead of just squat and tear stuff up! I must give credit to Aaron because this was his idea. Here is our entry way now:

Please ignore the rug, the vacuum, and the unfinished trim around the door… minor details.

In our old house, we used these frames and mirror in the entry way and staircase. We had to buy a few more frames and painted all of them white. Here is where the mirror and frames were in our last house:

As you may have noticed by now, the pictures posted on this blog are almost all of works-in-progress. That is because we are all about keeping it real (aka: nothing is ever finished enough to have that perfect picture taking look). Anyway, hope you like our new entry!

First time sewing!

Neither one of us has ever sewn anything before. Aaron has criticized me a lot for not being able to sew a button. Sew… (pun intended) we decided to sew our own curtains. Why not, right? The nice ladies at Hobby Lobby assured us that making curtains was the easiest sewing project. Since the room is vaulted, you can’t just buy curtains for it. We assume they would have had to be custom-made anyway, so why not try it and see what happens?

For comparison purposes, below is a picture of what came with the house. The curtains were ugly and big, but they did do a good job of blocking out all light. They also make wonderful paint tarps!

While everyone else was buying a half yard of fabric, we went all out and bought 15 yards of fabric and 15 yards of the room darkening backer. Go big or go home.

Here is a close up of our fabric:

Before we did all of this, we also had to purchase a sewing machine. We bought a Singer from Wal-Mart. We figured it would be easy to return if we decided that sewing wasn’t our cup of tea. Aaron did the actual showing and I have a picture to prove it! I did all the pinning, which I think was more work. Just sayin.

And here is the awesome finished product!

Here is a reminder of the before and after. Not too shabby!
